My Favorite Christmas Lyric

I am not ashamed to admit that I’ve already got the Christmas spirit, or either it’s gotten me. I love the old songs of Christmas and the deep truths conveyed in many of the lyrics. Possibly my favorite one of all time is from O Holy Night. This verse about Jesus never fails to reach out and wreck my heart, even if it’s when I’m in the middle of the cereal aisle…

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.

So what is your favorite line from a Christmas song?

  1. 1833
This carol brings tears to my eyes when I listened to it as gospel for the first time. There is a spiritual war going on and Jesus came for His own to rescue from the snarl of Satan’s claws. Hallelujah to Jesus the Lord! Praise God!

    God rest ye merry, gentlemen
    Let nothing you dismay
    Remember, Christ, our Saviour
    Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan’s power
    When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

    In Bethlehem, in Israel,
    This blessed Babe was born
    And laid within a manger
    Upon this blessed morn
    The which His Mother Mary
    Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

    From God our Heavenly Father
    A blessed Angel came;
    And unto certain Shepherds
    Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

“Fear not then,” said the Angel,
    “Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
    Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
    From Satan’s power and might.”
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

    The shepherds at those tidings
    Rejoiced much in mind,
    And left their flocks a-feeding
    In tempest, storm and wind:
    And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

And when they came to Bethlehem
    Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
    Where oxen feed on hay;
    His Mother Mary kneeling down,
    Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises,
    All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
    Each other now embrace;
    This holy tide of Christmas
    All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

  2. Love that verse also. Another favorite:

To save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray.

As an aside, don’t you think “Joy To The World” more describes Christ’s second coming than his first?

  3. My favorite is from “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” The lines are:
“Mild, He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.”
It’s my favorite carol and is full of rich words that really speak to me.

  4. Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
    Sleep in heavenly peace
    Sleep in heavenly peace
For a personal reason, do I like this song…many of my own nights are not silent, but filled with fear, I would love to be there @ the night where all is calm and all are sleeping in heavenly peace…what I have learned that this same calmness can be with me now and always, b/c Jesus is near! I also love Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
    On my drum?
Here is a child who was poor and had nothing to give but his gift…much like me!! 🙂

  5. This is my favorite Christmas carol, too!
    The lines I love are:

Long lay the world in sin and error pining
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth

I particularly love that second line… that our soul feels its true worth in and through Christ.

  6. Perusing your words as I prepare to embark on tomorrow’s journey.

Just wanted to say that O Holy Night is my favorite carol as well.

    The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
